Harry Kane hat-trick as Bayern hit RB Leipzig for six in Bundesliga opener

Bayern kicked off the 2025/26 Bundesliga season with an impressive 6-0 win over RB Leipzig on Friday night. Michael Olise scored a first-half brace either side of Luis Díaz bagging his first league goal for his new club. Harry Kane then took centre stage at the Allianz Arena with a second-half hat-trick.

Vincent Kompany named the same team that started last weekend’s Franz Beckenbauer Supercup triumph in Stuttgart. Manuel Neuer captained the team to begin his 20th season in Germany’s top flight. Konrad Laimer, Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Josip Josip Stanišić were in defence, with Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka in midfield. Olise, Serge Gnabry and Díaz were the attacking trio behind Kane.

Devastating display

Earning the right to open the new season as champions, Bayern showed just why topped the pile barely three months ago. They controlled proceedings from the off, with Olise producing the campaign’s first shot inside four minutes, which was deflected behind. Laimer had a great chance against his former club when running onto a Kane lob over the defence, but he slipped when taking his shot, which was saved by Péter Gulácsi.

The season was 27 minutes old when Olise started the scoring as he smashed a loose ball across goal on his weaker right foot after Stanišić was dispossessed in the penalty area following some slick passing through the middle. Díaz doubled the advantage only five minutes later with his first shot in the Bundesliga, latching onto Gnabry’s one-touch lay-off after more quick passing and smashing in off the underside of the crossbar. Olise had his brace and Bayern’s third shortly before the break when Gnabry again laid off the ball to the right of centre. The France international chopped inside and coolly picked out the near bottom corner.

Kane’s half

Although the second half saw more of Leipzig coming forward, it was still Bayern who enjoyed the best of the action. Kane very nearly set up Olise with a ball across the face of goal, but it was soon all about the England captain’s finishing. He first rounded off a counter-attack after a Leipzig free-kick when he cut inside his marker from the left and slotted in at the near corner. The visitors thought they had one back through Antonio Nusa until it was ruled out because the ball had been moving at their free-kick.

After a string of changes from both sides, Kane had his second and Bayern’s fifth, running onto a Díaz flick on the left and bending his right-footed effort inside the far post. His hat-trick was in the bag only four minutes later, this time going down the outside on the left and firing in with his left foot for Bayern’s sixth and their biggest opening win since 2020.

With six goals and three points on the board, Bayern will now prepare to begin their DFB Cup campaign away at Wehen Wiesbaden on Wednesday
