Bayern bow out of Europe after draw

FC Bayern were held to a 1-1 draw by Villarreal on Tuesday night, exiting the Champions League 2-1 on aggregate. Munich were dominant throughout but had to wait for 50 minutes until Robert Lewandowski broke the deadlock. Samuel Chukwueze levelled the scores on the night and restored Villarreal's lead on aggregate in the closing stages, and the Reds were left to rue their missed chances. With the biggest European prize out of reach, Bayern's full focus is on the Bundesliga now, and their quest for their tenth straight title resumes on Sunday.

Bayern started with Manuel Neuer in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano and Lucas Hernández in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Jamal Musiala, Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané and Kingsley Coman, with Lewandowski up front. Serge Gnabry, Alphonso Davies and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting took over from Musiala, Hernández and Müller late in the second half.

Goalless at the break

The 70,000 crowd at the Allianz Arena saw Bayern in the driving seat, with a well organised Villarreal side frustrating the German record champions. Musiala saw an effort blocked, goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli denying Sané and beating Lewandowski to a Kimmich cross.

FCB came closest to an opener when Musiala saw a header saved, but clear-cut chances were few and far between despite Munich's unceasing efforts. Villarreal's Gerardo Moreno hit the side-netting with the half-time whistle imminent, and Bayern still trailing on aggregate.

Late shock

Proceedings were similar after the restart but Julian Nagelsmann's men were more forceful now. Rulli denied Musiala, Sané put a free-kick into the wall and Upamecano fired over, but Bayern cancelled out the deficit when Coman intercepted a stray pass in midfield, with Müller inviting Lewandowski to crash home via the inside of the post.

Müller steered a header wide with a golden chance. The away side then levelled the scores out of the blue with two minutes remaining. Moreno's squared ball on the break found Chukwueze, who rounded off the counter with his shot going into the ground and over Neuer, and Bayern's dream of advancing to the last four was dashed.

Bayern will be back in action on Sunday when they travel to face Arminia Bielefeld in the Bundesliga.
