Bayern bow out of Champions League against Manchester City

FC Bayern were held to a 1-1 draw by Manchester City in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie on Wednesday, exiting the competition 4-1 on aggregate. Munich were dominant in the first half but failed to take their chances, and their hopes of overturning the 3-0 first-leg deficit were dashed when Erling Haalang put City in front just before the hour mark. Joshua Kimmich levelled the score from the penalty spot in the closing stages.

The Bavarians started with Yann Sommer in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt and João Cancelo in defence. Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala and Kingsley Coman, with Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting up front. Alphonso Davies, Sadio Mané, Mathys Tel, Thomas Müller and Josip Stanišić came on for Cancelo, Sané, Choupo-Moting, Musiala and Pavard in the second half.

No goals

Bayern dominated possession from the off, but the first quarter-hour was devoid of clear-cut chances. Sommer beat Ilkay Gündoğan to a pass before Musiala teed up Sané, who had only keeper Ederson to beat on the break but fired wide. Upamecano was soon shown a red card for a last-man challenge on Haaland, but he was spared by the offside flag.

Sané saw a free-kick saved and Goretzka had an effort blocked before aiming too high, but City were awarded a penalty for handball against Upamecano. However, Haaland fired over from 12 yards. Ederson denied Sané before the Bayern man fired wide again. Choupo-Moting and Goretzka's efforts were blocked as a goal refused to come before half-time.

Kimmich's goal not enough

Coman saw a shot deflected wide, Sommer saving from Haaland at the other end. But after Ederson denied Coman, City countered, with Haaland beating Sommer to put the English side four goals ahead on aggregate.

Choupo-Moting warmed Ederson's gloves before Bayern had the ball in the net, but Tel's goal was chalked off for Coman's offside position. Munich were soon awarded a penalty for handball, Kimmich converting to level the scores on the night.

Champions League elimination means Bayern have six games left of their season as they look to defend their Bundesliga title. They're next in action on Saturday with a trip to Mainz.
