FC Bayern were beaten 3-0 away at Manchester City in Tuesday night's Champions League quarter-final first leg. Rodri put the home side ahead before the half-hour. Bayern had many chances to level the scores but lacked precision in front of goal, and Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland extended City's lead midway through the second half. The two heavyweights will meet again in the return leg at the Allianz Arena next Wednesday.
The Bavarians started with Yann Sommer in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt and Alphonso Davies in defence. Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich anchored a midfield featuring Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané, with Serge Gnabry up front. Sadio Mané, Thomas Müller and João Cancelo came on for Musiala, Gnabry and Davies in the second half.
Trailing at half-time
The 53,400 capacity crowd in Manchester saw an evenly matched affair between two attack-minded sides. Haaland miscued a shot and Ilkay Gündoğan headed over the bar, Davies dragging a shot wide at the other end. Sommer only just managed to clear against Haaland after a back pass and Sané saw an effort blocked.
Sommer snaffled a tame Haaland shot before Rúben Dias made a fine block against Musiala. But Rodri soon handed the home side the lead when he curled into the top corner of the net from 25 yards. Sommer made a strong save against Gündoğan. Sané only just miscued from distance as Bayern went into half-time a goal down.
Nothing doing against clinical City
Bayern hit the ground running after the restart, Sané seeing two efforts saved. Kimmich made a block against Haaland before chances came and went for Sané, de Ligt and Coman. The pendulum then started to swing back as it had done throughout the game, Sommer denying Nathan Aké and Dias this time.
Pavard headed over but the day turned sour when Munich gifted away possession in front of their own box, Haaland's cross inviting Bernardo Silva to head in. Sommer denied Julian Alvarez but was unable to prevent Haaland from making it three from a cross. The Bayern keeper made two strong saves against Manuel Akanji and Rodri as City won 3-0.
The German record champions will be back in action on Saturday when they entertain Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga.
