FC Bayern were held to a 2-2 draw by Real Madrid in Tuesday night's Champions League semi-final first leg at the Allianz Arena. Bayern were dominant in the first half, but Vinicius Junior put Real in front after 20 minutes. Leroy Sané levelled the scores after half-time and Harry Kane soon handed Bayern the lead from the penalty spot, but Vinicius Junior also converted a penalty to make the final score 2-2.
The Bavarians lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Joshua Kimmich, Eric Dier, Minjae Kim and Noussair Mazraoui in defence. Leon Goretzka and Konrad Laimer anchored a midfield featuring Sané, Thomas Müller and Jamal Musiala, with Kane up front. Raphaël Guerreiro came on for Goretzka at half-time, Serge Gnabry and Alphonso Davies replacing Müller and Sané late in the second half.
Bayern dominant, Real clinical
After the fans unveiled a giant tifo in honour of Franz Beckenbauer, Bayern hit the ground running. Real keeper Andriy Lunin denied Sané and Kane before the latter fired just over the crossbar from the halfway line. Musiala miscued two efforts against the reeling visitors.
Real took the lead against the run of play when Toni Kroos' through ball invited Vinicius Junior to slot in. It was a more balanced affair now, but Bayern still had the better chances. Musiala and Goretzka saw their shots blocked and Kane's free-kick went only just wide as Bayern were left to rue their missed chances at half-time.
Leroy levels in busy second period
Neuer made a fine save against Kroos after the restart, but Bayern levelled the scores when Sané charged into the box from the right and sidestepped a number of defenders before crashing home at the near post. Munich were awarded a penalty moments later when Musiala was upended in the box, Kane dispatching from the spot.
Kane saw a shot deflected behind and Dier had a header saved. Neuer denied Vinicius Junior, but Real were awarded a penalty after Kim's challenge on Rodrygo, Vinicius Junior converting. Gnabry fired over late on as the heavyweight encounter ended in a stalemate.
The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to face VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga. Bayern and Real will meet again in the return leg in Madrid next Wednesday.
