FC Bayern were held to a goalless draw by Copenhagen in the Champions League on Wednesday night. The result ended Bayern's competition record run of 17 consecutive group game victories, but the German record champions extended their streak of matches without defeat in the groups to 39.
The Bavarians lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Konrad Laimer, Leon Goretzka, Dayot Upamecano and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Joshua Kimmich and Raphaël Guerreiro directed operations in front of the rearguard, with Kingsley Coman, Thomas Müller and Mathys Tel in midfield and Harry Kane up front. Aleksandar Pavlović, Leroy Sané, Serge Gnabry and Frans Krätzig took over from Guerreiro, Coman, Tel and Davies in the second half.
Goalless first half
After the Südkurve unveiled an impressive tifo in tribute to the 2013 Champions League triumph and to mark the 100th game on the European stage at the Allianz Arena, Bayern dominated proceedings, with Copenhagen sitting deep. Tel fired wide and Guerreiro miscued from distance before Roony Bardghji curled an effort just wide at the other end.
Copenhagen keeper Kamil Grabara made a fine save to deny Müller's close-range header as Bayern upped the ante in search of an opener, but Munich lacked the final ball against the visitors' solid defence, and the game was deadlocked at half-time.
No way through
The pattern was similar after the break, although Diogo Goncalves flashed an effort narrowly wide early on. Tel blasted over and Kane saw a thumping effort saved. Grabara tipped Sané's free-kick over the bar, with Upamecano miscuing a header at a corner.
The contest was more intense in the closing stages, Neuer shining with a double save against Mohamed Elyounoussi. Bayern were awarded a penalty for handball in injury time, but match official Stéphanie Frappart overturned her decision after VAR intervention as Bayern and Copenhagen shared the spoils. The six-time European champions now sit on 13 points from five games, having already secured first place in Group A.
The German record champions will be back in action on Saturday when they entertain Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.
