FC Bayern are through to the Champions League knockout stages after beating Galatasaray 2-1 on Tuesday night. Munich had the better chances but had to wait for 80 minutes until Harry Kane broke the deadlock. Kane soon netted a second before Galatasaray's Cedric Bakambu pulled one back into added time, but Bayern deservedly won the match and Group A after Manchester United lost to Copenhagen.
The Bavarians lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Noussair Mazraoui, Dayot Upamecano, Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Leon Goretzka and Joshua Kimmich anchored a midfield featuring Kingsley Coman, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané, with Kane as the target man. Musiala had to be replaced before half-time, Thomas Müller taking over. Konrad Laimer, Mathys Tel and Serge Gnabry came on for Upamecano, Sané and Coman in the second half.
No goals
The match got off to a lively start with both sides looking to attack, with Neuer denying Mauro Icardi before Kane had a shot saved at the other end. Sané was denied by keeper Fernando Muslera before he and Musiala fired wide.
Bayern often found space but lacked the final ball. Muslera saved another Sané effort, with Upamecano heading wide. Neuer saved from Icardi and Kimmich saw an effort blocked as the sides headed into the break with the game deadlocked.
Kane seals it
The best chance came when Goretzka flicked on a Coman cross and Kane hit the post from close range. The England captain miscued a header before Galatasaray had the ball in the back of the net, but the flag was up for offside.
Coman fired wide and Sané saw a shot blocked as Bayern increasingly imposed their possession game, and Munich took the lead when Kane rose to meet a Kimmich cross and headed home. The flag originally went up for offside, but the goal stood after VAR intervention. Bayern soon put the game to bed when Tel squared for Kane to turn home. A Müller shot went inches wide before Bakambu slotted past Neuer, but it made no difference to the outcome as Bayern guaranteed their place in the knockout stage yet again.
The German record champions will be back in action on Saturday when they entertain Heidenheim in the Bundesliga.
