FC Bayern beat Lazio 3-0 on Tuesday night to book a berth in the Champions League quarter-finals. Harry Kane and Thomas Müller overturned the 1-0 first-leg deficit in the first half before the England striker rounded off his brace in the second half for a 3-1 aggregate victory.
The Bavarians lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Joshua Kimmich, Matthijs de Ligt, Eric Dier and Raphaël Guerreiro in defence. Aleksandar Pavlović and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Leroy Sané, Müller and Jamal Musiala, with Kane up front. Alphonso Davies, Mathys Tel, Konrad Laimer and Serge Gnabry came on for Guerreio, Müller, Sané and Musiala late in the second half.
Dominant display
Munich soon asserted their dominance after a balanced first quarter-hour. Musiala saw a shot from distance saved and a Kane effort was deflected just wide before two efforts in quick succession by Musiala and Guerreiro were blocked.
Dier headed over before Ciro Immobile miscued a header at the other end, but Bayern soon levelled the scores on aggregate when Müller and Guerreiro combined before Kane powered a header past Lazio keeper Ivan Provedel. Musiala fired just wide of the far post, but Munich made it two on the night when Müller diverted a sumptuous De Ligt volley home with the half-time whistle imminent.
Kane rounds off result
Proceedings were similar after the restart. Another Musiala shot was deflected behind, with Guerreiro also firing wide. Munich extended their lead after the hour when Provedel parried against Sané, but Kane was on hand to mop up the rebound.
FCB imposed their passing game now and Müller hit the post before a Sané shot flew inches wide. Goretzka made a crucial block against Luis Alberto as Bayern maintained a clean sheet and deservedly advanced to the last eight.
The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday when they entertain Mainz in the Bundesliga. They will learn the identity of their Champions League quarter-final opponents on 15 March.
