FC Bayern beat Copenhagen 2-1 on Tuesday night to consolidate their lead in Champions League Group A. After an uneventful frst half, Lukas Lerager handed the home side the lead, but Jamal Musiala and sub Mathys Tel overturned the deficit to seal a deserved victory. The win means Munich set a new record for the most consecutive away games without defeat in Champions League group stages at 18.
The Bavarians started with Sven Ulreich in goal and Noussair Mazraoui, Dayot Upamecano, Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies in defence. Konrad Laimer and Joshua Kimmich anchored a midfield featuring Leroy Sané, Musiala and Kingsley Coman, with Harry Kane up front. Thomas Müller, Tel, Leon Goretzka and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting took over from Laimer, Sané, Musiala and Coman late in the second half.
Goalless first half
The 35,690 crowd in the Danish capital saw Bayern dominate possession, with the home side sitting deep, although they pressed high intermittently. It meant clear-cut chances were at a premium in the first half, Bayern struggling to find a way through the packed defence. Coman, Musiala and Sané all saw efforts blocked before keeper Kamil Grabara denied Kane.
Ulreich saved a Mohamed Elyounoussi header before Viktor Claesson raced clear and had only the Bayern goalkeeper to beat, but his shot went wide and the linesman's flag was raised in any case. A Kimmich curler went just over and Grabara saved from Sané as the sides went into the break with the game deadlocked.
Reds bounce back
Grabara saved from Kimmich, but Copenhagen then struck at the other end. Kim originally blocked a Claesson effort, but Lerager netted the rebound. It took individual quality to level the scores, Musiala sidestepping two defenders before he found the bottom far corner of the net.
Sané saw another shot saved before Elyounoussi miscued at the other end. Munich upped the pressure in the closing stages, with Goretzka miscuing a header. Kane soon teed up Müller with a flicked header, the old hand retaining possession in the box and squaring to Tel, who smashed home. Copenhagen went looking for an answer and Jordan Larsson failed to make header tell before Ulreich made an excellent scrambling stop to claw out a deflected Larsson effort as Bayern sealed victory.
The result means Bayern have six points from two matches in Group A, two clear of Galatasaray. The Bavarians will be back in action on Sunday when they entertain Freiburg in the Bundesliga.
