FC Bayern beat Manchester United 1-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday night. Kingsley Coman made the difference when he scored midway through the second half of a hard-fought match at Old Trafford as Bayern extended their Champions League records to nine away group stage victories in a row and 40 straight group matches unbeaten.
The Bavarians lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Noussair Mazraoui, Dayot Upamecano, Minjae Kim and Alphonso Davies in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Coman, Jamal Musiala and Leroy Sané, with Harry Kane as the target man. Konrad Laimer came on for Mazraoui at half-time, with Mathys Tel, Thomas Müller and Raphaël Guerreiro taking over from Coman, Musiala and Sané in the second half.
Stalemate at the break
The contest was long on aggression and short on clear-cut chances at first, United keeper André Onana denying Kane and Kimmich. Luke Shaw warmed Neuer's gloves before Sané wriggled clear and tried to find Musiala in the box, but the pass was intercepted.
Bruno Fernandes put a free-kick into the wall before a Coman cross found Sané, whose first touch let him down. Kane saw an effort blocked, but Bayern lacked the final ball and the sides went into half-time with the score 0-0.
King seals it
Fernandes fired over and miscued another effort as United upped the ante after the restart, knowing they had to score to have a chance of progressing, but Bayern soon reasserted their dominance. Kimmich missed the target with one of his shots and Onana beat Coman to a Musiala pass, but Munich took the lead when Kane's fine pass invited Coman to slot past Onana.
Kim saw an effort blocked and Kane headed just wide. The game petered out as Bayern sealed a deserved win to extend a number of records.
The result means Bayern finish Group A on 16 points from six matches. They will learn the identity of their next Champions League opponents on Monday. The Bavarians will be back in action on Sunday when they entertain VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga.
