FC Bayern downed Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 on Tuesday night and got off to a perfect start to the Champions League campaign. Harry Kane, Raphaël Guerreiro and Michael Olise handed Bayern a three-goal half-time lead. Bruno Petković and Takuya Ogiwara scored for Dinamo after the interval, but just when it looked as if the away side could stage a fightback, Munich ran riot. Kane scored another three goals, Olise rounded off his brace and Leroy Sané added his name to the scoresheet.
Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Guerreiro, Minjae Kim, Dayot Upamecano and Alphonso Davies in defence. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlović anchored a midfield featuring Olise, Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry, with Kane as the target man. Sven Ulreich replaced Neuer, who had collided with an opponent, at half-time. Sané, Thomas Müller, Eric Dier and Leon Goretzka came on for Olise, Musiala, Kim and Guerreiro in the second half.
First-half dominance
Munich were utterly dominant from the off and soon had the ball in the back of the net, but Musiala's goal was ruled out for offside. Gnabry soon had another goal chalked off for offside, but Bayern were awarded a penalty for an earlier foul after VAR intervention, Kane dispatching to put Munich in front.
Guerreiro fired wide from distance, but Bayern soon doubled the lead when Musiala chested down a cross for Guerreiro, whose sumptuous half-volley found the top corner of the net. Vincent Kompany's men made it three when Olise rose high to plant a header past keeper Ivan Nevistić.
Action-packed second half
Dinamo pulled one back after the restart, Petković scoring on the stretch from a cross. Bayern were reeling now and Josip Mišić set up the charging Ogiwara, who beat Ulreich. Musiala saw an effort saved, but Bayern soon had Ulreich to thank for preserving the lead when he denied Marko Pjaca.
The German record champions got a grip again and Kimmich's shot was parried, with Kane on hand to mop up the rebound. The England captain scored again minutes later, but another goal was disallowed for Gnabry's offside position.
Munich put the game to bed when Musiala squared for Olise to tap in and make it 5-2. Gnabry saw an effort saved and fired just wide before Bayern were awarded a penalty for handball, Kane converting to round off his hat-trick and the half-dozen for FCB. The referee pointed to the spot again minutes later and Munich's marksman stepped up once more to bag his fourth. Sané's shot from 20 yards found the low corner of the net before Goretzka added the final flourish when he headed home from Kimmich's pinpoint cross.
Bayern will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Bremen in the Bundesliga.
