FC Bayern were knocked out of the DFB Cup in the second round after a 5-0 defeat away at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The home side took an early lead through Manu Koné. Ramy Bensebaini doubled the Foals' advantage before adding a third from the penalty spot. Proceedings were similar after the restart, with Breel Embolo bagging a brace to confirm the elimination.
Bayern lined up with Manuel Neuer in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano, Lucas Hernández and Alphonso Davies in a back four. Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka anchored a midfield featuring Serge Gnabry, Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané, with Robert Lewandowski up front. Niklas Süle, Kingsley Coman, Corentin Tolisso and Josip Stanišić took over from Upamecano, Davies, Goretzka and Gnabry in the second half.
Gladbach on the front foot
The Foals roared out of the blocks and struck after only 70 seconds, Koné gaining possession in Bayern's half and beating Neuer following a one-two with Embolo. Jonas Hofmann soon had only Neuer to beat but fired wide. The Bayern keeper then made a strong save to deny Embolo two minutes later.
Denis Zakaria miscued a volley, but Gladbach doubled the lead when a Hofmann square invited Bensebaini to slot home. The hosts were awarded a penalty after an Hernández challenge on Embolo. Bensebaini converted from the spot. Bayern went looking for a reply but Upamecano headed over the bar and Gnabry saw an effort saved. Goretzka fired over from 20 yards as Bayern went into the break three goals down.
Reds punished
Goretzka saw an effort saved but the home side soon closed out the meeting. Nico Elvedi's long ball found Embolo, who finished clinically against Neuer. The FCB keeper made a strong save against Zakaria but was powerless to prevent a fifth from Gladbach. Luca Netz's through ball found Embolo to slot home.
Gladbach netminder Yann Sommer denied Lewandowski and Gnabry. Sub Stanišić fired over before Müller saw two efforts saved as Bayern's 85-game scoring run and cup campaign both came to an end.
FCB are back in action on Saturday when they travel to face Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.
