Workmanlike Bayern beat Grasshoppers 2-1

FC Bayern beat Grasshoppers 2-1 in Tuesday evening’s dress rehearsal for the Supercup. Bayern were dominant in the first half and took a deserved lead when Lennart Karl found the net before Jonah Kusi-Asare made it two. Loris Giandomenico pulled one back for the home side after half-time, but Bayern went on to claim a narrow victory.

Grasshoppers had the first chance when FCB loanee Jonathan Asp Jensen fired narrowly wide, but Vincent Kompany’s men soon asserted their dominance. A Serge Gnabry shot was deflected behind before Felipe Chávez fired over. Bayern took the lead when Karl unleashed a sumptuous curler that found the top corner of the net.

Munich made it two when Karl set up Kusi-Asare, who sidestepped a defender and blasted home. Kusi-Asare almost made it three but aimed just too wide before Tom Bischof miscued his powerful drive, and Bayern were two up at half-time.

Grasshoppers fought back after the restart and a Marques cross soon found Giandomenico, who unleashed a volley into the top corner of the net. Jonas Urbig denied Muci before Kompany made nine changes on the hour mark.

Michael Olise saw a shot blocked and Josip Stanišić blasted wide from distance before Joshua Kimmich’s pinpoint pass found Dayot Upamecano, whose header hit the bar. Luis Díaz soon shone with a fine solo run, only to see his shot saved before the Colombian fired narrowly wide. Harry Kane made a crucial block and Urbig made a fine save against Verón Lupi, but Bayern saw out the storm and sealed a victory.

The Bavarians will be back in action on Saturday when they battle it out with VfB Stuttgart for the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.
