FC Bayern were beaten 3-0 by RB Leipzig in the 2023 Supercup at the Allianz Arena. Dani Olmo handed Leipzig a two-goal lead before half-time and rounded off his hat-trick after the hour mark as Munich lacked the cutting edge in front of goal. New signing Harry Kane made his debut for Bayern in Saturday night's match.
The Bavarians started with Sven Ulreich in goal and Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt and Alphonso Davies in defence. Konrad Laimer and Joshua Kimmich anchored a midfield featuring Leroy Sané, Jamal Musiala and Serge Gnabry, with Mathys Tel up front.
Noussair Mazraoui, Minjae Kim and Kingsley Coman took over from Pavard, de Ligt and Laimer at half-time, Kane and Leon Goretzka coming on for Tel and Kimmich in the second half.
Early setback
The 75,000 full house at the Allianz Arena saw an up-tempo contest that began with an early setback for the home side, Olmo making the most of a mix-up in the box after a free-kick. Gnabry and Tel saw their efforts saved before the Frenchman also fired one over.
A Sané free-kick was diverted onto the post by a defender, while Ulreich denied Werner at the other end. Leipzig doubled the lead when Werner's pass found Olmo, who controlled the ball with his first touch and beat Ulreich from close range. Bayern were left to rue their missed chances at half-time.
Wastefulness costs Bayern
Munich hit the ground running after the restart, Sané firing wide before Gnabry's square only just evaded Tel on the stretch. The latter saw another effort saved and Musiala's follow-up was blocked before Kane came on to thunderous applause just hours after signing for the club.
There was little he could do when Leipzig were awarded a penalty for handball, Olmo converting to round off his hat-trick. A Coman effort was saved and Mazraoui hit the side-netting, but a goal just refused to come, as Leipzig went on to claim the Supercup.
The Bavarians will be back in action on Friday when they travel to face Werder Bremen in the opening fixture of the new Bundesliga season.
