Bayern warmed up for Saturday’s DFB Cup first round tie against SV Drochtersen/Assel with an entertaining friendly win over Bundesliga 2 side Hamburg.

Just three days after lifting the Supercup, FCB coach Niko Kovac fielded a mix of experience and youth in the first half back at his former club, including defensive trio Ivan Mihaljevic, Maxime Awoudja and Derrick Köhn, and there were plenty of chances for both sides. However, it was HSV who took the lead midway through the period when Khaled Narey slotted home after Lewis Holtby squared the ball inside the box. The lead lasted less than 10 minutes though as Sandro Wagner coolly converted a penalty after Gotoku Sakai had taken down Kingsley Coman. The highlight of the half was Wagner’s second – a bold backheel from Leon Goretzka’s cross from the left to put Bayern into the lead.

The home boss Christian Titz made 10 changes at the break and the hosts came close early on through Jairo Sampeiro, but it was all Bayern from that point on. Renato Sanches looked to emulate Wagner’s second goal with a backheel of his own, Coman fired straight at Julian Pollersbeck and Sanches again was inches from a goal when he fired into the side-netting from a tight angle. There was a nice moment on the hour mark for Thomas Müller, who came on exactly 10 years to the day since making his FCB debut against Hamburg, and the forward marked the occasion with two goals of his own. The first saw him react quickest to a deflected cross, while the second was a shot placed perfectly into the bottom corner in the dying minutes.

From here Bayern head 30 miles northwest to the small town of Drochtersen for the weekend’s cup match against the fourth-tier side before the Bundesliga season finally gets underway next Friday evening at home to Hoffenheim.
