Hitzfeld: We played good football today

The Bayern players, officials and coaching staff were understandably delighted after a thoroughly professional 3-0 victory away to Energie Cottbus on Saturday. “The team put in a very respectable performance,” Uli Hoeneß enthused. Coach Ottmar Hitzfeld was delighted for the club’s loyal supporters: “I’m pleased we’ve given something back to our fans today,” he reflected.

Reaction to Energie Cottbus v Bayern:

Uli Hoeneß: “The team put in a very respectable performance today, especially is terms of passing and movement. We were highly mobile and never let Cottbus get started.”

Ottmar Hitzfeld: “I’m pleased we’ve given something back to our fans today. We were on a roll. Our goal was always to finish the season in a respectable and decent manner, and make sure we turn in as good a performance as possible. We played some very good football today and always had our opponents under control. We were solid at the back too, so I think our fan can go home happy.”

Mark van Bommel: “We’ve proved we’re capable of playing good football here today – but we’ve not done it often enough this season, and that’s why we’re so many points off the top.”

Petrik Sander (Cottbus coach): “We’d been hoping for a very different outcome today, but if you’ve got the stadium on its feet applauding after a 3-0 defeat, you know something very special’s already happened. The team’s worked hard for their reward across the 32 matches before this one, so they’ve earned the right to sit back a little now and celebrate with the fans. We’ve played a Bayern Munich side missing five or six regulars, and that’s basically highlighted our limitations.”

Sergiu Radu (Cottbus): “I’m sorry for our home crowd. It wasn’t a good display in our final home match, but avoiding the drop was always our target this season.”
