Bayern have been drawn to face UEFA Cup novices Getafe of Spain in the quarter-finals of this season’s competition, with a semi-final against the winners of the Bayer Leverkusen v Zenit St Petersburg tie in prospect should Munich overcome the little-known Primera Division outfit in the last eight.
Bookmakers' favourites Bayern will regard the last eight tie as tough but achievable, although there will be slight disappointment in the Bavarian camp that the first leg is at home, with the decisive return in Spain a week later.
The draw for the remaining knockout stages of the competition was made by UEFA General Secretary David Taylor, assisted by former Manchester United and Manchester City legend Denis Law, at UEFA headquarters in Nyon on Friday afternoon.
Action-packed April
Getafe, from the southern Madrid suburb of the same name and based at the 17,000 capacity Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, were only promoted to the Spanish top flight for the 2004-5 season. Current boss Michael Laudrup has led his men to headline victories over Barcelona and Sevilla this term, before a double victory over Lisbon giants Benfica to book a place in the UEFA Cup last eight. Currently tenth in the Primera Division, Getafe rely heavily on striker Pablo Hernandez, with four goals to his name in Europe so far.
The quarter-final ties will be played on Thursday 3 April, and Thursday 10 April, with the semi-finals - for which Bayern would again be at home in the firtst leg - on Thursday 24 April, and Thursday 1 May. The final takes place on 14 May at 8.45 pm at the City of Manchester stadium in the north-west of England.
