Reaction to Bayern's fine win against VfB Stuttgart

Sunday's 4-1 victory over outgoing champions VfB Stuttgart means Bayern require just a single point from their four remaining matches to be mathematically certain of restoring the shield to the Säbener Strasse trophy cabinet. The thrilling win was just the tonic the players needed ahead of the UEFA Cup semi-final return against Zenit St. Petersburg. "I'll accept congratulations on the championship now,“ declared Bayern manager Uli Hoeneß afterwards. "It's not realistically possible to knock us off top spot any more.“

Reaction to Bayern v VfB Stuttgart

Franz Beckenbauer: "What can possibly go wrong? I do feel Bremen and Schalke could win their last four matches, but it's impossible to imagine Bayern losing all of theirs.“

Uli Hoeneß: "I'll accept congratulations on the championship now, it's not realistically possible to knock us off top spot now. What Ribéry did for the third goal was amazing, really unbelievable.“

Ottmar Hitzfeld: "VfB were tough to beat today, and we had no end of problems, especially in the first half. VfB came at us and were the better team for a long spell. We were more determined in the second half, we won our challenges and scored the goals at exactly the right time. Our third was fantastic, unbelievable. The margin of victory was a shade too high, VfB had some good chances. We're grateful to Michael Rensing for some good saves. Obviously I'm delighted if people want to congratulate us, but only when the time is right. We'll be patient, and we'll celebrate when the time is right.“

Armin Veh (VfB coach): "They won by too many goals from my point of view. We matched them in open play, but we didn't make the most of our chances on the break. We equalised and might have taken the lead, but Bayern went 2-1 up from a free-kick and that pretty much settled it. After Ribery's unbelievable class for the third goal the game was over as a contest. We came here looking for something, and I can't criticise my team. Bayern's class means they deserved to win.

I want to congratulate Bayern on the title, they've been favourites throughout. They have the best squad and the best individuals. My compliments to Ottmar Hitzfeld, who's yet again built a championship-winning team. I think one or two clubs will be regretting not getting after Bayern this season. I think it'll be a lot more difficult in seasons to come once the team's truly settled.“

Mario Gomez: "We came here determined to take something, a point wouldn't have been bad. But we went looking for victory because we knew Bayern were a little tired. We were at least as good as them in the first half, but their second goal was the turning point. The margin was too big at the end of the day, it's bitter for us.“
