Fierce fight for places in Bayern attack

Luca Toni was both literally and personally confronted with the new situation in the Bayern attack on Friday. His four rivals practised passing, tactical moves and pressing, but the top scorer at the club last term worked out all on his own. Fitness coach Darcy Norman put the Italian through his paces for a full 45 minutes’ worth of punishing stamina-building routines.

Louis van Gaal has the choice of five strikers for the coming season: Toni, Miroslav Klose, newcomers Mario Gomez and Ivica Olic, and youthful talent Thomas Müller. By way of comparison, last season’s line-up featured first-choice pair Toni and Klose, with only Lukas Podolski, now returned to his hometown club FC Köln, as back-up. Each of the three also spent at least one long spell on the sidelines with injury last season.
