'I'm very satisfied'

Reaction to Bayern's victory over Milan

Louis van Gaal received a warm welcome on his coaching debut at the Allianz Arena. The crowd rose to acclaim the new boss as he emerged from the tunnel and made his way to the dugout. The Dutch supremo patiently signed autographs, before watching his team complete a highly successful evening for the club, with a 4-1 win over AC Milan in the Audi Cup semi-final.

"I'm very satisfied," the Bayern coach declared after the final whistle. In the second-to-last warm-up match before the weekend DFB Cup tie away to Neckarelz, Van Gaal found nothing to criticise. "I think we played good football."

Reaction to Bayern v AC Milan:

Louis van Gaal: " I think we played good football. We were patient, and we retained possession well. We were especially good when our opponents had the ball. I'm very satisfied. It was a great atmosphere, and it's whetted the appetite for the season now. Obviously, it's the final the fans wanted [against Manchester United on Thursday evening]."

Mark van Bommel: "The most important thing was the way we won it – and it really wasn't bad at times. We controlled our opponents, we created far more by way of chances. 4-1 is a shade flattering, but playing it through to our strikers on the floor worked extremely well for a long spell."

Jörg Butt: "The key thing today was putting into practice what we've been working on with the coach in pre-season. There was plenty to admire, although you mustn't read too much into a game like that. Milan are only just back from America after a long journey, so we should keep our feet on the ground. But we looked good at times, and it carried on even after we substituted half the team on the hour. It's important that every player knows what he has to do in his position, and then goes out and does it."

Mario Gomez: "At the end of the day, let's not forget it's only a friendly, and Milan certainly didn't play as well as they can. They weren't very fresh or creative today. But we did well. We let the ball do the work, we created chances, and we scored goals. We can be pleased."

Bastian Schweinsteiger: "We've played well. We've done what the coach told us to do, although you have to admit Milan were very tired, so we shouldn't read too much into the score. The result isn't what mattered. The key thing is for us to take the coach's philosophy on board, so we're pleased we've gone out and done a job today. We're on course, although we can obviously do even better. It was good to see our system working well, including the direct passing game the coach strongly favours. It did look pretty good at times." presents highlights from the Audi Cup with English commentary on Saturday
