The first thing onlookers saw was a van pulling up to the side entrance of the performance centre. Two kitmen loaded the vehicle with cases, all packed to the brim with training kit and equipment. A short time afterwards, the Bayern team bus drew up alongside. The luxury chariot also took a full load on board. The Bayern mini-convoy was bound for the same destination, namely Donaueschingen.
Fifteen days after the official start of pre-season, Louis van Gaal and his team are preparing to set off for this year’s summer training camp on Thursday. Just as in 2006 and 2007, the Bayern party is staying in the Öschberghof hotel in the picturesque surroundings of Donaueschingen, on the edge of the Black Forest some 50 km from Freiburg and half that distance from the Swiss border. With a break for this weekend’s T-Home-Cup at the Schalke Arena, Van Gaal and his troops will spend their time until 24 July on intensive preparations for the new season.
