Two-goal Gomez races off the blocks

Mario Gomez could hardly have wished for a better start to his Bayern career than the brace which set his new club on their way to victory over Neckarelz on Sunday. The summer arrival from VfB Stuttgart made a vital contribution as the 14-time winners edged into the second round of this term’s DFB Cup . “As a striker, you always want goals, no matter who you’re playing,” the 24-year-old said.

With the game deadlocked at 0-0 after fully 51 minutes, Bastian Schweinsteiger released Gomez for a charge down the left channel, the goal-getter enjoying a slice of good fortune when his first real shot of the game struck the inside of both posts before trickling over the line. Six minutes later, Gomez stepped up to convert a penalty awarded for handball.
