Following the two-week domestic break to accommodate 2010 World Cup qualifiers, Bayern are poised for the first truly demanding and intense phase of the new season with seven matches in the next 21 days, starting with Saturday’s Bundesliga trip to Borussia Dortmund (Live in English from 3.15 pm on FCB.tv Web Radio). The Bavarians are aiming to pick up where they left off in beating champions Wolfsburg 3-0 last time out, hoping to warm up on a winning note for Tuesday’s challenging Champions League opener away to Maccabi Haifa.
“This is the start of a crucial period for us, with a game every three days,” commented FCB director of sport Christian Nerlinger on the eve of the league trip to Signal Iduna Park and a largely hostile 80,000 sell-out crowd. “We finished second last season, which would rate as a success for any other Bundesliga club, but we’re never satisfied with second place,” continued Nerlinger, calling on the players to make amends for a “weak start” to the league campaign: “Success is our only option. We have to start taking points.”
