Bayern have been handed a challenging away trip in the third round of this season’s DFB German Cup. Following the draw, held live on national TV in the early hours of Sunday morning, the 14-time winners were paired with top flight rivals Eintracht Frankfurt. The game will be played on 27 or 28 October.
The clubs have previously met three times in the national knockout cup competition. In the 1974 semi-finals, Paul Breitner and Uli Hoeneß scored for FCB, but Eintracht ran out 3-2 winners. Fifteen years later, the men from Munich took revenge in the first round with a 1-0 victory in Frankfurt. That was also the score in Bayern’s favour three years ago, when Claudio Pizarro’s goal separated the sides in the final at the Berlin Olympic stadium.
Scheduling details for the tie will be determined in the coming days. Curiously, the teams are also set to meet just a few days ahead of the cup encounter, when Eintracht visit the Allianz Arena in the Bundesliga on 24 October.
