Jörg Butt reckons it is “the biggest fixture on the Bundesliga calendar,” Louis van Gaal regards it as “an extremely important match,” and Daniel van Buyten was even moved to describe it as “a Champions League game.” Certainly, Saturday evening’s edition of the long-running north-south clash between Bundesliga leaders Hamburg and third-placed Bayern (Live in English from 6.15 pm on FCB.tv Web Radio) has even more of an edge than normal this time. “It’s a match for first place,” mused Van Gaal. If results elsewhere fall in their favour, a win over the current leaders could see Bayern go top of the table for the first time this season.
“We know we can take a huge step forward at the weekend and could even go top,” Butt commented. However, others feel the league positions after just seven games are not that important. “We still have plenty of time to worry about first place,” said Ivica Olic, “what matters for now is the three points.”
