A full complement of match officials led the teams onto the field, the dug-out was packed with coaches, physios and subs, a crowd of some 500 watched intently, and fan clubs hung banners over the safety fence – what looked just like a genuine match at the Säbener Strasse on Tuesday afternoon was, in fact, a genuine match. The Bayern seniors and reserves battled to a 5-5 draw after 90 full-blooded minutes of play.
“It was important for some of the squad to play a full 90 minutes. A few of the players, both seniors and reserves, really needed this,” Andries Jonker explained to FCB.tv afterwards. The match brought down the curtain on a week in which the assistant coach ruled the roost in training. Head coach Louis van Gaal, who has been attending to private matters in the Netherlands, will be back in change as of Wednesday.
