Gomez on target

Morale-boosting wins for Germans and Dutch

There are no Bundesliga fixtures this weekend, but a number of Bayern players were still plying their trade as normal on Saturday. Nine months ahead of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, a clutch of FCB stars were involved in crucial qualifying fixtures, while others warmed up for the final rounds of the qualification programme with friendlies.

Bayern's four-strong Germany contingent fell into the latter bracket. Philipp Lahm, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Mario Gomez started the Germans' deserved 2-0 victory over 2010 hosts South Africa, while Miroslav Klose replaced Gomez at half-time to earn a 90th international cap.

Mario opens the scoring

At the freshly renovated and extended BayArena in Leverkusen, Germany opened at a good pace and passed accurately and swiftly in the opening phase. Gomez crowned the best of the passing moves with the opening goal of the game after 36 minutes.
