Bayern have clocked up their first three points in this season’s Champions League. The men from Munich beat Maccabi Haifa 3-0 in Tel Aviv, but Louis van Gaal’s team were made to work hard for the victory. “In the second half, we gave the ball away too often and we lost our shape a little,” reflected the Bayern coach, predicting difficult evenings ahead for group rivals Juventus and Bordeaux when they travel to Israel.
Reaction to Maccabi Haifa v Bayern:
Karl-Heinz Rummenigge: “It’s a good start and just what we wanted. Juventus have only drawn, so we’ve gone straight to the top of the table. That’s exactly what we hoped would happen.”
Louis van Gaal: “It was the match I was expecting. I think the first half was outstanding, but we failed to score. In the second half, we gave the ball away too often and we lost our shape a little. I corrected that with my substitutions, and we scored the goals. In the second half, you could see Franck Ribéry was struggling with his fitness, but I knew he would. He needs to work his way back in the Bundesliga and in the Champions League. Maccabi can play football, and I think Juventus and Bordeaux will have problems winning here.”
