Resurgent Bayern making up lost ground

Success breeds success, and a fourth win on the bounce has prompted the FCB camp to muse on the Bundesliga standings. “It was vital to win and move up the table. We can start thinking about the top now,” reckoned match-winner Daniel van Buyten. “It’s been a good week,” reflected Uli Hoeneß in the wake of a 5-1 win in Dortmund, a 3-0 success away to Maccabi Haifa and Saturday’s 2-1 derby victory over Nürnberg.

“Three comfortable wins counts as OK,” a satisfied Hoeneß continued as he addressed reporters at the Allianz Arena after the meeting with Nürnberg, although the victory over Munich’s Bavarian neighbours hardly rated as glittering. “It was hard work against a very well organised but very defensive team,” said coach Louis van Gaal. “But I’m delighted we’ve won, and I think it was deserved.” The stats bore him out: FCB won the shot count 23-6, had eight corners to their opponents’ two, and controlled 67 percent of the possession.
