Bayern won the first contest in this week’s double-header against Eintracht Frankfurt, but Wednesday’s rematch in the DFB Cup Round of 16 is an entirely different proposition. “It’s a whole new game in a another competition. We can forget Saturday’s match,” said captain Mark van Bommel prior to the cup tie, set to take place in front of a 51,500 full house at the Commerzbank Arena.
“Different rules apply in the cup,” agreed Louis van Gaal, denying his side started at an advantage due to the 2-1 Bundesliga success at the weekend, although the match schedule had made preparing for the second meeting in the space of five days much easier, the coach remarked. “The players still have their impressions and knowledge of our opponents in their heads,” he reasoned.
