Double penalty save overshadowed by defeat

It takes a lot to make Jörg Butt lose his cool. The man from Oldenburg is a supremely composed character, and has also seen almost everything there is to see in 14 seasons as a pro. However, in the immediate aftermath of Bayern’s 2-1 Champions League defeat away to Girondins Bordeaux, even the stoic keeper emanated a mixture of rage, frustration and bewilderment.

He exited the Stade Chaban-Dalmas without uttering a word to the crowd of reporters, and was still not prepared to make a statement by the time of the post-match banquet some hours later. It was not that he had no tale to tell, as he saved not one but two penalties against the French champions. He conceded the first himself with a foul on Marouane Chamakh, but made up for the mistake by beating out Yoann Gourcuff’s spot-kick. His save to deny sub Jussie’s penalty two minutes from time was even better.
