When it happened, it was simplicity itself. First, Mark van Bommel chipped the defence and Miroslav Klose lobbed Frankfurt keeper Oka Nikolov for the opener. Five minutes later, the striker calmly netted from Thomas Müller’s lay-off to make the score 2-0. It all looked nonchalant, but Klose had in fact gone fully seven and a half months without a goal in a Bayern shirt.
“Obviously I’m aiming for a better strike rate, but you occasionally go through lean times,” said the 31-year-old, who unselfishly spurned the chance of a hat-trick by squaring for Müller to slot into the empty net for the third when he might have taken on Nikolov himself.
