Van Gaal: You have to score to win matches

Frustration was the dominant emotion in the Bayern camp after the stalemate against Juventus on Tuesday. The Bundesliga side remain undefeated in ten Champions League group fixtures at the Allianz Arena, but it was a game the Bavarians could easily have won “We had the chances but failed to score,” fumed Louis van Gaal afterwards. “Overall it was a good performance, but you’ve got to score,” agreed Philipp Lahm.

Reaction to Bayern v Juventus

Louis van Gaal: “We were outstanding against a big-name team in the first half, but we’ve not gone on and won the game. We dominated the match and Juventus had very few chances. I don’t think we’ve played better this season than in the first half tonight. We had a number of clear-cut chances, but we failed to score, and that’s a shame. But if we keep playing like that, it’s just a matter of time. Sometimes chances just don’t go in, luck comes into it as well. You have to score goals to win matches.”

Philipp Lahm: “It’s disappointing when you’ve made so many good chances but end up drawing 0-0. If you’re one-on-one with the keeper, you have to score at least once in the Champions League. I think we played very, very good football in the first half and made chances, but you’ve got to put them away, especially in the Champions League. We had enough chances to have scored tonight. We made more errors in the second half. Overall it was a good performance, but you’ve got to score.”
