Bayern’s 1-0 victory over Maccabi Haifa and Juventus’ 2-0 defeat in Bordeaux means the men from Munich travel to Turin two weeks from now with their Champions League fate in their own hands. Relief was the dominant emotion in the FCB camp, although Louis van Gaal felt his team were profligate on the night. “We could have won by more,” the coach said, “but I’m pleased. I’ve watched a very good game.”
Reaction to Bayern v Maccabi Haifa
Louis van Gaal: “I’ve watched a very good game. We’ve created plenty of chances, but at the end of the day we’ve scored just the one goal. We could have won by more. We maintained our discipline through to the end. We have a fifty-fifty chance of going through. I think we’ll create chances in Turin. I’d like us to go there and score an early goal.”
Uli Hoeneß: “You can see the players still aren’t as confident as they ought to be. On the one hand, they tried very hard and they made chances, but on the other hand, they again failed to score enough goals. But we needed this boost, and winning has given us just that. We’ve given ourselves another last chance in the Champions League. That’s definitely a confidence-booster.”
