Martin Demichelis has had a tough time of it this season. An ankle injury forced the defender to the sidelines for a long spell at the start of the campaign, and he only fought his way back into the team in late autumn. Even then, his lack of rhythm and match practice was evident, as a string of lapses marred what were otherwise solid performances in the increasingly assured FCB rearguard.
However, the Demichelis of old was on display in the opening fixture of the second half of the Bundesliga campaign, as Bayern beat Hoffenheim 2-0. “That’s the Micho we know,” the player himself told fcbayern.de. Reliable and uncompromising in the tackle, with a match-best 71 percent of his challenges won, he posed a constant threat from set-pieces and set his side on their way to victory with the all-important opening goal - Martin Demichelis is well and truly back.
