Bayern remain on course to hit their targets in the league, the cup and now in Europe too, following a narrow but ultimately merited 2-1 Champions League Round of 16 home leg victory over stubborn Fiorentina on Wednesday night. The win puts FCB in a good position for the return in Tuscany on 9 March, where a draw would see Munich through to the last eight.
“We’ve won, which is what matters,” commented Louis van Gaal after the meeting in front of a 66,000 full house at the Allianz Arena. “We’re a goal ahead. It’ll be difficult in Florence, but we have a fifty-fifty chance, or maybe just a little more than that.” Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said he was “satisfied, because we’ve won. We can go to Florence hopeful of making the next round.”
