Bayern continue assault on league leaders

Bayern’s drive for top spot in the Bundesliga continues this weekend – and FCB are hoping to reach and retain first place for longer this time. Munich have been top of the pile for a single day on each of the last three weekends, but victory over Wolfsburg on Saturday (Live in English from 3.15 pm on FCB.tv-Web Radio) could see leaders Leverkusen, who travel to Bochum, finally toppled from their perch.

“It’s going very, very well for us at the moment, so we’ll go to Wolfsburg full of confidence,” said Philipp Lahm. Last season, the Wolves won the corresponding fixture 5-1, a result which was to prove a milestone en route to the club’s maiden domestic league title. “But that was then. This season, we’re going there looking for the three points,” declared Lahm, insisting that last term’s meeting counted for nothing any more.

The going-in position is certainly entirely different: Bayern, unbeaten in their last 13 Bundesliga fixtures, have won their last seven with 23 goals for and only six against, but the champions have failed to win in their last eight. Lorenz-Günther Köstner was drafted in two weeks ago to replace the luckless Armin Veh, and takes charge of the team at home for the first time on Saturday.
