Birthdays mean presents, and for Bayern’s 110th anniversary, equipment supplier adidas is giving the club a new kit, to be launched in May this year. The red-and-white striped design harks back to a former glorious era, so that Mark van Bommel & Co’s heroic performances will now visually resemble the derring-do of the greats such as Franz Beckenbauer, Uli Hoeneß, Gerd Müller and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.
The slogan Legenden und Loyalität (legends and loyalty) and a depiction of all-time leading scorer Gerd Müller is woven into the collar. On the occasion of Bayern’ 110th anniversary on 27 February 2010, the motto succinctly embodies the core components of the club’s long and successful history.
The design elements draw on the past, but the kit itself features state-of-the-art materials. In a radical departure from conventional shirts, and in a first for the Bundesliga, the jersey boasts special body-fit properties thanks to proprietary adidas TECHFit™ PowerWEB technology. The fabric is shaped to be tight to the skin, improving blood flow to the muscles. Integrated thermo-polyurethane elements store the kinetic energy generated by the body.
“The new kit expresses the special affinity between the players and the fans,” commented FCB vive-captain Philipp Lahm. “Legends only grow out of shared values and a will to succeed, just as at Bayern.”
