Starlet Thomas maintains fine scoring record

Saturday’s match was already three minutes into stoppage time, but Thomas Müller could yet have fired his side to victory. Nürnberg defender Andreas Wolf’s sliced clearance landed at Müller’s feet, and he was clear in front of the home goal. But the 20-year-old’s first touch was a poor one, and FCN keeper Raphael Schäfer seized the loose ball. The full-time whistle blew immediately afterwards.

“I’m obviously gutted,” confessed Müller after the match at the easyCredit stadium. Bayern and Nürnberg drew 1-1 in the 180th Bavaria derby, ending FCB’s 13-game winning streak. “It’s unbelievably disappointing we’ve not scored a second,” Müller continued.

The versatile forward had handed his side a 38th-minute lead, finishing off a move he himself initiated with a pass to Ivica Olic. Mario Gomez returned the ball towards the penalty spot, where Müller side-footed high into the top right corner after intuitively continuing his run. It was the young starlet’s seventh Bundesliga strike this term, and his 13th in all competitions. Only Gomez has scored more for Munich.
