Bayern missed a chance to motor clear at the top of the Bundesliga, but the FCB camp was fundamentally satisfied with Saturday’s 1-1 draw away to Bayer Leverkusen. After 21 days featuring a packed programme in three different competitions, the men from Munich’s draw in the Rhineland was enough to strengthen their league position with the climax to the campaign approaching fast.
“I’m satisfied, given we’ve had seven games in three weeks. We’re top of the standings, we’ve extended our lead by a point, and we’re still six points ahead of Leverkusen. It’s in our own hands now,” commented Louis van Gaal after the clash with the side in third. Second-placed Schalke fell to an unexpected 4-2 defeat away to Hannover 96, Bayern’s next opponents, and now go into their arguably more tricky run-in two points off the lead.
