A wave of enthusiasm and satisfaction broke over Bayern at the weekend after a seven-goal gala kept FCB well on course for a 22nd domestic league title. Some 1,500 fans turned out at the Säbener Strasse on Sunday just to watch the team warm down. Fully 69,000 packed the Allianz Arena the previous evening, revelling in a festival of goals and occasionally scintillating attacking play from their heroes in red.
The celebratory mood was justified. Bayern thrashed Hannover 7-0 to regain top spot in the Bundesliga standings in some style. Schalke had beaten Gladbach 3-1 earlier in the day and temporarily overtook Munich. “It was important we gave the right answer, right away,” declared FCB chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. “It was a lot of fun today, out on the pitch, in the stadium, and also for the coach,” enthused Louis van Gaal, “we played extremely well. It was a wonderful display.”
