Double-winning Bayern ‘not done yet’

After Saturday’s cup final, the Bayern players gathered in front of their 30,000 fans in the West Stand at the Berlin Olympic stadium for a frenzied celebration of the club’s second trophy of term. Following a one-sided 4-0 win over holders Werder Bremen, captain Mark van Bommel had just received the golden DFB Cup from federal President Horst Köhler and hoisted it into the night sky.

“Textbook football,” “Football of the highest quality,” “unique and impressive,” enthused chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, club president Uli Hoeneß and director of sport Christian Nerlinger after watching FCB clinch the double for the eighth time, on the same ground where they had sealed a 22nd German league title a week earlier. The players echoed the management’s thoughts: “outstanding,” said Holger Badstuber, “sensational,” thought Bastian Schweinsteiger, “magnificent,” concluded Thomas Müller.
