In the draw for the second round of this season’s DFB German Cup, Bayern have been handed a tough home meeting with old foes Werder Bremen. In what is already the biggest tie of the round, extra spice is guaranteed by the fact that the clash is a re-run of last season’s cup final, when Louis van Gaal’s men turned on the style to thrash Werder 4-0.
The draw, made live on national TV by DFB director of sport Matthias Sammer and 2011 Women’s World Cup Organising Committee President Steffi Jones, means holders and favourites FCB face a challenging obstacle in their quest to extend their record number of DFB Cup triumphs to 16, although Van Gaal and his squad will be delighted at having home advantage.
Munich beat fifth-tier Germania Windeck 4-0 in the first round with goals from Miroslav Klose, Franck Ribery, Toni Kroos and Mario Gomez, while Thomas Schaaf’s Bremen side overcame third division Rot Weiss Ahlen by the same score in what proved Mesut Özil’s last game for the club.
The second round ties will be played on Tuesday and Wednesday the 26th and 27th of October.
