The Bayern loyalists who travelled to the Supercup in Augsburg cheered each of their heroes as they took to the Impuls Arena pitch one by one. The fans were celebrating again after the 2-0 win over Schalke, which not only earned the men in red and white a first trophy of the season, but thoroughly whetted the appetite for the new campaign. “We’re already back at the level of last season,” Holger Badstuber insisted beforehand, and the match proved the young defender right.
Right from the kick-off, the champions picked up where they left off last term, with smooth passing, the bulk of the possession and rock-solid defending. Bayern’s attacking moves took a little time to click, but became increasingly assured as the game went on. “We dominated, but didn’t create that many chances. But it’ll come,” Bastian Schweinsteiger said afterwards.
