José Ernesto Sosa is to swap the foothills of the Alps for the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. The Argentina international, whose contract with Bayern was scheduled to run until 30 June 2011, is moving from the Bundesliga to Italy’s Serie A, joining 1989 UEFA Cup winners SSC Napoli for an undisclosed fee.
Sosa came to Bayern from Estudiantes de La Plata in summer 2007. Many experts rated the attacking midfielder’s potential very highly, but the player was never able to make the breakthrough at FCB.
Sosa, an Olympic football gold medallist in 2008, scored two goals in a total of 35 Bundesliga appearances. He also made ten appearances in European competition and six in the DFB Cup, adding no further goals to his total. The right-sided player spent the second half of last season back at his home club Estudiantes on loan.
He has now left Munich and FCB for good, seeking a fresh start with UEFA Europa League hopefuls Napoli, who opened their Italian top flight campaign with a 1-1 draw away to Fiorentina on Sunday. The 25-year-old has signed a four-year deal with the Azzurri.
