Sponsor duties precede Kaiserslautern clash

The first round of Bundesliga fixtures continued on Saturday afternoon, but the Bayern players had swapped boots for horsepower at that moment in time. Mark van Bommel and Co boarded the team bus for the transfer to Ingolstadt, where Audi hosted one of the most keenly-anticipated sponsor appointments of the year, as the coaching and playing staff and the board were presented with their new company cars.

“We’re proud about coming here every year to pick up the best cars in Germany,” declared FCB President Uli Hoeneß in a brief speech at the Audi Piazza. The Ingolstadt manufacturer has been supplying the Bayern company fleet since 2002. “It's always a great day for the players,” Hoeneß continued, a statement echoed by Thomas Müller: “It's very nice coming here every year basically to collect a fabulous gift,” the rising star commented.

Müller’s S5, Schweinsteiger’s A8

For Müller, who has opted for a 354 horsepower S5 Coupé, it was a second trip to Ingolstadt. Bastian Schweinsteiger has experienced the annual ritual many more times than that. The Germany midfielder has selected a 326 HP A8 this year. “The younger players like the sports models. I’ve had quite a few Audis now, so I’ve gone for the elegance of the A8,” the 26-year-old explained. However, Schweinsteiger and Co will have to be a little patient before actually driving away in their new vehicles, as the entire Bayern party were taken back to Munich in the team bus.
