Crucial late goal was ‘typical Schweinsteiger’

Ahead of Basel’s meeting with Bayern, Thorsten Fink spoke at length about his former team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger. “Back then, it was obvious he had the potential,” said the 42-year-old FC Basel coach: “But he spent years playing on the flank. He’s not necessarily the fastest player around, so he never became world-class in that position. He was good, but no more than that.”

Schweinsteiger has now moved into central midfield, “and he may now be playing in the position from where he can become a global star.” The 26-year-old has also grown enormously as a personality, Fink said. “He was a bit of a naïve youngster. But now he’s a leading pro, a role model, and he has the qualities you need to be a captain.”
