Six games into the Bundesliga season, Bayern are fighting to stay in touch with the leading group, but in Europe, Louis van Gaal’s men are leading from the front thanks to an opening day success at home to AS Roma. The second Champions League Group E fixture sees Munich visit Swiss champions FC Basel on Tuesday evening (Live in English from 8.30 pm CET on Web Radio), where a win would take FCB another step towards the knockout stages.
“We started out with three points in the Champions League, and we want to build on that now,” said Philipp Lahm on the eve of the clash between the two double-winning FCBs at St. Jakob Park. “It's terrific when you go a long way in the Champions League, as we found out last season. If we can lay down a marker and win in Basel, and start with six points from two games, it would be worth its weight in gold,” Lahm continued.
However, Bayern will need to put a poor display in losing 2-1 at home to Mainz behind them and recapture something of their best form. “One of the great things about football is that you can put things right just three days later. And we have to put things right, because our performance on Saturday wasn’t good enough for the Champions League,” chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge warned after the defeat to Mainz.
