Van Gaal’s verdict

Too careless on the ball, too few goals

The Bayern camp was a relieved and upbeat place after the midweek victory in Basel, but Louis van Gaal’s match analysis also contained harsh criticism for his players. “It's driving me crazy,” the FCB coach fumed. Yet again, an individual error had led to the opposition coming from nowhere and scoring.

A misplaced pass in midfield led directly to Basel netting the first goal of the night at St Jakob Park. It was the seventh goal FCB have conceded this term, and losing possession has been the root cause of nearly all of them - in Basel, Hoffenheim, and Kaiserslautern, for example.

“We’re defending well as a team and we’ve not actually let in many goals. Our problem is not when our opponents have the ball. It's when we have the ball but give it away stupidly. This has to improve,” said Van Gaal, pointing the finger at his team’s careless build-up play. “We could be much better when we have possession. It's clear to everyone that we’re losing possession too often.”
