At the point where Werder Bremen were creating clear-cut chances galore, Louis van Gaal was suddenly calm. “After Bremen missed their third chance, I said to my assistant Andries Jonker: ‘We’ll win this. If they don’t score, we will,’” revealed the “delighted” Bayern boss, addressing the post-match news conference at the Allianz Arena.
Seated two places away from Van Gaal, Werder supremo Thomas Schaaf was anything but delighted. “I’m very disappointed,” he remarked, “we’ve robbed ourselves of victory. We should be very angry with ourselves tonight.” No-one who had actually witnessed the DFB Cup second round tie was in any mood to disagree. Van Gaal expressed “complete understanding” for Schaaf’s take on the game.
